The teacher-development course...

The teacher-development course will include a review of the major ELT methodologies and how these are being adapted for Content and Language Integrated Learning.

The Cambridge TKT CLIL module will give a broad background to the theoretical principles of CLIL and teachers will be invited to join Academic Summer teachers in the planning of a wide range of curriculum subject lessons and to observe the delivery of these in English to mixed nationality groups of primary school age learners.

We will approach CLIL learning and teaching with a specific focus on each of the 4 Cs and on practical ways in which we can explore these

Content – how can Content teachers develop their  language skills and how can  Language teachers develop their knowledge of curriculum subjects to produce the best of
both worlds?

Cognition – how do people think and learn in different disciplines?  How do students of the Arts, Sciences and Humanities acquire, classify, compare and evaluate information?

Communication – how do people communicate the knowledge they have?  What writing and speaking skills do CLIL learners and their teachers need to work on?

Culture – how do the different cultural backgrounds we come from influence the ways in which we learn and communicate?  Which cultures have influenced and continue to influence the world we live, study and work in?

The course will also look at the ways English is changing and evolving from a foreign language into English as an International Language.  We will present and practise ideas for helping CLIL learners constantly develop Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency and Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills.  This will be done in the context of the academic and social programme at Academic Summer.

Teachers may also have the option to formalise their own CLIL development during the course at Academic Summer.  Options include:
Cambridge ESOL Teaching Knowledge Test CLIL and Young Learner modules.
City & Guilds Spoken English Test for Teachers at levels B1/B2 or C1/C2 with CLIL and Young Learner component.
